“It’s hard going home because my family isn’t completely accepting and I feel like I have to suppress or hide who I am. I feel like i have to recover everytime I get back from dealing with family. What’s your advice on how to cope?”
Thank you for submitting your question. I’m so sorry to hear you’re dealing with this! It’s understandable how you feel you have to recover after hiding yourself. You’re using a lot of emotional/mental energy! When it comes to situations like this, do what’s best for you. Is going to visit your family for the holidays (I know, thanksgiving has passed! I’ll touch upon that.) really worth it-could you get together with friends? It’s okay if you need to take a break from family. Holidays are difficult for everyone, but a lot harder if you’re having to suppress a big part of you. If going home/being involved with your family for the holidays is something you have to do, that’s okay too. When you’re home and in your own space I’d recommend doing things that you enjoy to do where you can be yourself. Watch some Netflix, hang with friends, create art, write about it, play some sports, whatever makes you happy and causes less stress for you.
